Tour - Part 3 - Marshall Galactic

The space parties came and went blindingly. The beer, copious and clean. The women, befuddling. It goes this way. The air is hot in these places and the guitars are loud. My gibson has been showered with coors light two nights in a row. Afterwards, for a few minutes maybe, I was indignant. But looking into the sweet drunk faces of men and women I came to love and forgive them. Space is dangerous. But these people were soft. And they came for our music.

The tour is incredible. I feel like a king and a hero everywhere. It's one thing to be in a band. Another thing to be in a touring band. To think of myself and brett and travis as the last guard of a dying breed makes the itchy crotches, hunger, hangovers, long drives, equipment malfunctions, and all of the combined torturous shit -- seem to be truly divine acts. Still, other bands have worked harder and longer. Support them.

We've been through slums in baltimore. Everywhere. It's a damn crusade. A crusade! crusade! All joyous and full of celebration.

The Deli across the street, here around 49th street in Manhattan, is delicious. Just like I've done in the past - remind myself, when breathing cool and clean air through clear nostrils, to appreciate that sensation so that someday when the cold moves through again and light hurts and the nose is stuffed tightly, I will know that I never took the simple act of breathing for granted. Just like I've done with similar things, I savor those peppered turkey sandwiches. Love em good and long like the last night with a special woman.

Now tonight I met a woman. Good and right like clean soil. I did not kiss her. Many times there is no need. The seat of the cab was comfortable. Then I called my friend Alyssa and told her I missed her. Sparks and bowling await in Austin. And truth be told that's all that good friends need.

Philly, philly. Parking was difficult. We had to wake in shifts starting at 8 in the morning to refill the coins for two meters. I drew the straw for the 8' o clock shift. Strange, because I was absolutely fucking sure that was the right straw to pick. I ended up taking all three shifts in the morning. Only because I enjoyed it. Even that had a sense of purpose, part of the crusade.

The Fire is now my favorite venue. Hell, they let you sleep above the place in their apartment and a faint smell of bud lingers on the floorboards, walls, and even around the sink. I found a frozen piece of pizza in the fridge. Brett advised me not to partake. Not because it might have been someone else's leftovers (the morsel was definitely forgotten for good), but because of the potential health hazards. I deliberated for about twenty seconds because I value his opinion and he's really good at keyboards. But, on the other hand, Brett seems to think that anything over a week old, no matter what the product, is probably no good. I decided to skip prudence and zapped the hell out of that piece of pie. It was delicious.

Some side-effects followed, however, into the next couple of days. I thought about calling my doctor. Then I realized I don't have one. I also realized I have no personal medical insurance and all the bands prized possessions would be stored overnight in a dilapidated trailer. This life is a shaky one. Funny as hell. Rich as gold.

A Weekend of Space Parties

This was the big weekend- Boston and New York Space Parties.
Earthlings, let me tell you:
These shows were PHENOMENAL.
Michael the Robot and Skiptronica provided the hip spaces for our parties to go down. And our parties were PACKED. I'm going to try to get some video up from New York Space Party asap. These parties were the real testing grounds for our new DIY show equiptment. We bought some JBL's, a 12 channel xynx mixer, a compressor, and a power-amp right before the tour. Marshall has become quite the sound guy and, thanks to his efforts, we absolutely screamed in both tiny rooms.
The coolest part?
Everyone knew the lyrics! We're a young band working our asses off. It's beyond rewarding when you travel the country and find that your songs are sticking in people's heads. A room full of silly drunk girls screaming "I'll Take It For Love!"
Priceless.

YES SO BASICALLY IT WAS AMAZING. and we dressed up and i wore the shiny tights,a nd shiny booty shorts, and a funny tanktop and red boots. and when we were walking to the party this guy in a minivan (GIAMV) was like
GIAMV: HEY GIRLS WHERE'S THE PARTY?
Us: The moon!!! ::laughter::
GIAMV's friend: Hey, come with us baby!
Us: ::LAUGHTER:: No.
GIAMV: COME ON BABY. YEAH BLAHBLAHBLHA STUPID.
Lea: You're driving a minivan.
Me (in my head, and in hindsight) : Where does he expect this to go? Like his poetry will convince me to abandon a party in favor of his losermobile?

Baltimore.

According to Wikipedia, Baltimore has the second highest rate of homicides in the United States. There is a roughly 15% chance that you will be vanquished each time you set foot in Baltimore. Luckily, the Sidebar is a hearty bar and they're on our side. The side of good? Perhaps just the side of space. Heres to not getting involved in a Frontier Brothers gang war.

We play all sorts of places. In other words, we're not snobs. Posh clubs, frat parties, punky house parties, and dive bars- whatever. The Sidebar is a REAL dive- the type of crusty old rock club where diseases are born (and dreams are made). I have a sneaking suspicion that these Baltimorians aren't prepared for our brand of space-pop.

We'll see.
I'll be back with a post-show report.

Hopefully..

Early review for Space Punk Starlet.

It's not even released yet and the reviews have started to pour in. Check out this bit from Austin Daze Magazine and the ever fabulous reviews editor, Daisy Riprock.

THE FRONTIER BROTHERS – Space Punk Starlet!

The Frontier Brothers are one of my favorite new bands, and their first full length CD did not disappoint.

Recorded with Stuart Sullivan (Okkervill River, Sublime, the Meat Puppets), Space Punk Starlet! has the characteristics of a group releasing their third or fourth album, as they have already crafted their own recognizable sound and feel. Combining honest to goodness fun with Bowie like musicality, the record goes from sounding big and happy to raw to downright luscious and beautiful. The added texture from the “Intergalactic Orchestra” is done tastefully and just not to say, “Hey man, we put a French horn on our album because we’re that cool.”

Their obvious enthusiasm is prevalent on the album, and the energy of their live shows comes through. I attended a recent show, shortly after their photo session with SPIN magazine, and the floor was shaking from the madness of the dancers. Quite a few people are becoming hip to this Austin trio, and my humble guess is many more will be after this release.

Every time I wake up, I'm in North Carolina.

Maybe they should have called it "The Frontier Brothers big ole' Nort Carolina tour" because it seems like we've been here forever. Every morning I seem to wake up in North Carolina. Its beautiful, sure, but perhaps we should be moving on. For the sake of diversity, we played three distinct types of shows:

Durham - An official Duke sponsored gig at the campus grill marked by supportive students, and soggy tacos.
Winston-Salem - A Fraternity party at "Pig Pickins." The fraternity kept asking for Jessie's Girl. Sorry.
Spencer - An outdoor picnic at the Spencer Gazebo. Family fun.

The shows were, on the whole, quite successful. We just have to keep hitting this tour spots over and over again and we will build momentum.
And as you know, "its all for the sake of momentum." Tomorrow we'll head out to Baltimore and then, the big weekend - New York and Boston.

Oh gosh, its going to be great.

Bowling on our night off

Salsbury - The "Ball sack" of America - Marshall Galactic

A week into the tour, we arrived at a park in North Carolina to play a little outdoor gathering. But this isn't about the gig, it's about the time afterwards and where my insatiable need to bowl brought us in North Carolina.
We were drinking with our friend Andrew Joslin, with whom we were also staying with for the night, he and his mom. He had some friends over. We had discussed earlier the idea of bowling. One of his friends suppposedly managed some lanes in the Salsbury. Unfortunately, Andrew's good friend was opposed to the idea of leaving the camp fire for the musky scent of carpet and cigarrettes. Kurt said he would rather die than go bowling. It was an epic turnaround. Andrew's powers of persuasion over the period of twenty minutes saw Kurt agree. Now after intense discussion and planning, we needed a car. So I undertook the task of unhooking the trailer. That's how bad I wanted to bowl. It was safer to leave the trailer alone in a parking lot than take it, hitched and locked and all, to Woodleaf Lanes.
Woodleaf was the scariest bowling alley I have ever been to. And normally, fear and bowling have no common property on this earth. Bowling is a peaceful sport, a respectful sport. But not so in Salsbury. Two homicides had taken place in the bathroom since the place opened. Beatings were common.
But fuck it, you gotta bowl. When we entered Brett and I and the rest of our party (nearly seven) were scoped hard by the locals. The bathroom floor was wet and I looked over my shoulder when I pissed. Still, I came out with some decent scores for a beginner, 156 and the like. After the good American sporting, we headed out for some american grub. At Waffle House we ran into a group of thugs who had attacked Andrew in high school. That was eight years ago, but they recognized him. Still, we utilized the jukebox. A family sat behind us chain-smoking beside their new-born baby. Salsbury. Ballsack of America.

Tour - Part 1 - Marshall Galactic

Well, I got this guitar strap for free - our first show of the tour in Dallas and I arrive with no guitar strap. So I went for the long shot and asked the sound guys - he had one, he said I could keep it too. Main reason I mention this random happening has to do with the smell of the piece. It smells like an army/navy surplus store. The olfactory sensation brought me back immediately to the times of my youth, when I frequented both surplus stores and duck ponds alike. Another example, today I walked into a bathroom in a Love's Truck Stop. I could have sworn I was in my ex-girlfriends home. She could have been right behind me or in bed with me in the morning. Normally I would treasure the flashback, but in this case these tender memories were couched in the context of a floor slick with piss and semi-caked mud where truckers slipped and missed the toilet bowl.
It must have been the air-freshener they used. Because for all the foul scenery it smelt fine in the place. My exe's mother must have used the same kind when she fluffed her pillows and rearranged things. But if my former lover still carries the same smell after having been absent from the old home half a year, it must be some kind of soul scent.
Smell touches my heart. And over the long period within the chrome hull of our mini-cruiser, jettisoned in empty space where sound and smell are the lighting of directional thrusters and the creak and pull of hot and cold metal resisting each other, where smell is harsh and sterilized like fluorescent lights in cold classroom, I rejoiced that one day we might find ourselves in the faraway fields of earth, making love to beautiful and confused co-ed females, and shredding wickedly, like sex.

Imposing the two el presidente margarita limit.

Its 12:09 AM. We will be driving to Memphis tomorrow. 7 1/2 hours. The first drive is always the worst.

We decided to leave behind a little legacy in Austin, just so you don't forget about us while we're gone. Here's the plan.
1. Go to Chili's on Guadalupe and 45th.
2. Go inside and look to your left.
3.
4. Order two El Presidente Margaritas.
5. Drunkenly imitate Marshall Galactic.

She's the paste monk tartlett of my la la la la.
6. Pass out.

- Check in daily for news from the road.

The Night Before Tour Begins

Brett already left early today for a funeral in Fort Worth. It's just me now. I've been frantically active in preparation for the tour, attending to my own small but vital concerns toward what we might face on the road. Everything is organized: a suit case for chords and mics (on which I slapped the free "Shure" sticker that came with my SM58), different suitcases for different articles of clothing, ties and and pants in one, casual clothes in another. Still, I know all of it will inevitably fall apart on the road and all those pieces will drift, suspended in the random zero-gravity confusion of tour tiredness and disorder. But still I prepare and it quiets me. I like the work.
When friends or people ask me stock questions, like "Are you excited?", I don't know how to respond. I've gotten used to telling them I don't get excited about much. It perplexes me how everyone is so "excited" all the time, as if pledging for a sorority or taking a two week trip to guatemala is like traveling to the space for the first time or something of equal value. Everyone is so excited.
That being said, I look forward to the tour. I was telling Trav that for the first tour, we were pretty much thrust into the grind of it. We had no idea what to expect, what to do, how to handle ourselves or keep our sanity. It was grueling. Then came the second tour. My mental state thus predicted the same sort of Bataan Death March. But now, as this tour beckons me back into the flame of road life, I'm trying out a different perspective: Like I'm a goddamned hero, I'm van zandt spreading the gospel. This is the vintage tour, hitting the road. Because I have bad habit of reducing every aspect of life to its most brutish, disgusting, and ironic state, being a little romantic does not hurt me.
Leaving for a long time, tonight, sitting around in the place that will soon be vacant is the sort of moment so terribly poignant that you want to ignore it. Like its not so dramatic, like you aren't leaving anything behind or taking too large a step. But if things go right I will not see my wood floors again for a long time. And everything will remain clean in this pierced moment, whiter than the rest.
First tour stop. Dallas,

-Marshall Galactic

Much to do.

I'm leaving town soon and I will be gone for a long time. All preparations must be made- its a lot like our legendary exodus from the Betelgeuse galaxy, now that I think of it.
I need to pick up the new shirts (you're gonna like them), pack up our gear (including new speakers!), and clean my car (just because).

Yesterday, we got new spacesuits. My old silver was starting to tatter. Its very difficult to get Nahalon Zwoot tunics made here in Austin. We brought our previous suits from Betelgeuse, of course, but this time around we found a local tailor to help out. Spandex- breathable, sexy, reliable.

Okay- another thing that happened yesterday. I went in to get a haircut and the receptionist recognized me as a Frontier Brothers. Cool, huh?

9/5/08 - In a year, Marshall Galactic will be the best bowler in austin, or better yet the tri-city area.

So I'm glad I can document this and be held accountable. I got my first ball today. It's called the "ice-storm". I also got shoes and a bag. Now I don't intend to buy my talent. It pisses me the hell off when these obese, nasty, lazy women species with no intention to lose weight spend exorbitant amounts of money on new tread mills or those gazelle things. I intend to practice, just as hard as I've been practicing on my shredding skills (which are coming along fantastically). And I rarely fail.

The tour is coming up and you'll be hearing a lot more from me, hopefully some more personal pieces. It's just hard for me to open up because I'm such a sensitive, complex, special guy. But when I bring home ice storm after a successful day at the lanes and dutifully but lovingly lull her to sleep within my arms, pressed tight against my sternum, I might be moved to write another, even more beautiful piece. (Which will finally make you bastards love me, LOVE ME!!)
