Saturday Night At The Aardvark

Here's what Anthony Mariani at the Fort Worth Weekly had to say:

"Calhoun will be joined at 2905 W. Berry St. near TCU by pop-singer-songwriter Sean Russell, One Lone Car, and The Frontier Brothers, a quartet that’s half-based here and half-based in Austin – I saw them at South-by last year. All I can remember is a holy racket and that little keyboard player, who plays and dances his ass off. "

Maybe you should show up. We could hang out or something.

Shea Butter

Instant hand sanitizer with Shea Butter. What is Shea Butter and why would I pay a dollar to apply any form of butter to my hands? They had this stuff in the checkout lane, like it was a hot product. It took forever to dry off, which I did not expect. Regular hand sanitizer dissipates instantly. The butter left a thin film behind. It smelled like the bathroom in a five star hotel. The instant sanitizing was rendered moot because my hands were still covered in shea butter.

Marshall, Travis, and Moses are back in the studio. We're cutting space punk starlet today. Its a new track that I don't think you've heard. In other news, Travis has started eating meat again for the first time in many years. That unethical bastard!

nothing pornagraphic about this post

Travis called at 3:30 - "Are you planning on coming to practice?"
I respond at 3:31 - "Be cool. What time?"
Travis respons at 3:31.5 - "3:00. You're late."

Arrive at Oogdala Spaceport practice room at 3:39. We're practicing Space Punk Starlet with a clicktrack. There is a brief equipment scare. Did my speaker just blow? Its just a quarter-inch cable thank the grand yeti!

Tomorrow morning we return to the studio to wrap up the album. Earth has never heard anything quite like this before. I hope the humans understand, despite their inability to hear frequencies below 20Hz. Isn't that a serious problem for them? They would be considered legally deaf on Betelgeuse. Stuart, our producer, says we have to re-record track 9. Shit.

I'm sitting in the back of The Green Muse - a snippy Austin coffee shop trying to channel the Amsterdam Coffeehaus mystique that actually doesn't even exist in Amsterdam. There is a mariachi band outside playing a version of La Bamba entitled Para Votar Obama. I'm going to throw up.

In case you're wondering what The Frontier Brothers are up to:

- We're recording a full length album produced by Stuart Sullivan in Austin, TX
- We will be playing SXSW day shows in Austin, including the official Austin Daze gala at Ruta Maya, the La Luz shindig with Carlis Star, and a Red Gorilla outfit of some sorts.
- We will be embarking on a national tour with our friends, lovers, cohorts Calhoun in April. If you live in Chicago, New York, Boston, St. Louis, or a variety of TBA locales, get pumped.

In other words, we've been busy.

Its amazing how far we've come. Last year at this time, we were playing limited opening gigs at small Austin and DFW clubs to crowds of 50 or 60 people. On Thursday, we played at Austin's top venue, The Mohawk, for a packed crowd that spilled out the front door into the Mohawk patio area. Earth clubs are so cool.

On Friday we opened for Sherwood at Dallas's chic Door Ballroom - aka - Gypsy Ballroom. Over 700 groovy youths packed the place. Rock'n'roll.

I wonder where we'll be next year?

It was a good week for us in Austin:

From the Austin Chronicle:

"The Frontier Brothers venture toward intergalactic indie rock, a cacophonous combination of jarring guitar, jingly piano pop, and weird science lyricism. The local trio's sophomore showing, Solar Power Struggle!, boots up like the Who's abandoned sci-fi rock opera Lifehouse as interpreted by Harry & the Potters: playfully anthemic. "

From Soundcheck Magazine:

"The Frontier Brothers - Mohawk: Ok, I have an embarrassing admission to make in such a public forum: I only recently discovered The Frontier Brothers. I know. I know. Where the hell have I been, right? What can I say? I’m making up for lost time, though. They will be at Mohawk on Thursday and I am going to be there. You?"

From the Onion:

"Though their name suggests yet another backwoods alt-country act, the only frontier The Frontier Brothers are interested in exploring is the final one. Last years Solar Power Struggle! EP canvassed the cosmospowered buy a rocket fuel of '80s synth lines, crunchy new-wave guitars, and bouncy ben Folds piano, with leader Marshall Galatic-whose official bio says that he hails from Neptune (in the future, no less)- croaking out joyously punky songs about robots and interplanetary transmissions. It's all a bit on the silly side, but the Fort Worth band, a recent transplant to Austin, is nothing if not contagious, and the preponderance of '60s harmonies and harmonicas help keep one foot fimly planted on the ground."

And last but not least, a photographer came over to our house from Study Breaks magazine, a seedy gossip rag catering to young earthlings. Oh wait, some would say we're young earthlings.

Just wait until the day they find out otherwise.
